How to Choose a Solid and Profitable Topic For Your Signature Course

In a score of 1-10 (10 is the highest rate), how bad do you want your online course to succeed?

If you answered 8-10, choosing a solid and profitable course topic is one of the MOST important things you have to do. Without properly identifying and validating your course topic, it's highly likely that you'll end up wasting your time, effort, and money on building a course that's only bound to fail.

Why You Should Take Time to Choose A Profitable Course Topic

I know it's easy to think you can just choose a random course topic, shrug it off, and move on. After all, wouldn't you want to build and launch your signature course as fast as you can?

But hear me, your course topic is essentially one of the bricks that your entire course will be laid upon. In fact, your course topic is where your signature course is going to revolve! Think of it as the SEED form of your entire course. What happens if you plant a spoiled or wrong seed? You'll end up reaping the wrong results (or even no results at all!).

This is why identifying and validating your course idea is super important. If you pick the right one, it's going to help you most as the course creator because you can have more EASE in creating and selling your course. You'll take far less time creating the curriculum because it's something that comes naturally to you. You can also promote and sell your course without feeling icky because you actually believe in it.

That means choosing a solid and profitable course topic -- especially after validating it -- will make sure that your course will ultimately sell.

In other words, by making sure your course topic is right and solid, you won't waste your precious time spending weeks or months creating a course that no one will end up buying.

What Makes a Great Course Idea

Now that you know why it's important, your next question would be what. So what really makes a great course idea?

I actually have four answers for you. These are the most essential characteristics of your course topic. It's a mix of profitability, alignment, impact, and scalability. Think about these as the core ingredient of your course topic. If one is missing, the one devouring it could tell the difference between one that has the complete ingredients.

After identifying your course topic, simply evaluate it through these criteria. If it's a check on all four, you're good to go.

4 Main Criteria for When You Choose a Profitable Course Topic

1 - Profitable

Your course topic must be a response, answer, or solution to a need or problem of your audience that they are desperate to solve. They can’t help but invest in your course because they know it’s exactly what they need.

ASK YOURSELF: Out of all the pain points and needs of my ideal audience, what can I help them with?

2 - Aligned

Your course idea should be something that sparks that fire and passion in you. You enjoy doing it or teaching it to the point that it comes naturally to you.

Contrary to popular belief, I don’t believe that you can just go ahead and build something without you enjoying it or being passionate about it. Yes, you can build a course from a random course idea but if you’re not enjoying it, chances are you won’t magnetize the right people for it with ease.

ASK YOURSELF: Do I enjoy sharing, doing, or teaching about this course topic?

3 - Impactful

Your course topic should be able to contribute to the lives of your students and create somehow a kind of domino effect on your students and the people around them. Think about it, people’s decisions usually don’t center around them. They think about how it affects their family or friends or lovers or even pets.

For example, when you want to launch a course about starting an online business, it is impactful in your ideal audience because once they build their business, they can be a stay-at-home mom. This would then affect how they can show up more for their children. They can also be more financially free which means they would have fewer arguments about finances with their husbands. See? Your online course didn't just affect the student directly taking your course; it also impacted the people around them.

ASK YOURSELF: In learning this course topic, how will it impact my students and the people around them?

4 - Scalable

Your course topic should be scalable in a way that there are more ways for you to expand it. Think long-term when you choose a profitable course topic. If this is your signature course, you should be able to expand it further whether in terms of launching it again with update modules for more info or launching it in a different audience that would gain results from it too.

Building one course is like building another branch of your business, or even a new business itself. So, when you choose a profitable course topic, it should be able to open more opportunities for you as an entrepreneur.

ASK YOURSELF: WIll I be able to expand this course topic into something better and further?

Your Next Step

As entrepreneurs, the shiny object syndrome is real. You can easily fall into the trap of starting something (in this case, choosing your course topic) that actually isn’t effective and profitable in the long-term.

This is why identifying and validating your course is SO important — for you to build a strong foundation for your course and ensure that there’s a market for it and it's actually going to sell. Because, there’s no point in business if there’s no one to sell it to and get results from it, right?
